October 4 is a recognized day to honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).  The violence experienced by Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada is a National tragedy. Family members, Indigenous Community Members and concerned citizens gather for a vigil every October 4 to honour the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. These vigils take place across Canada, as well as internationally. These gatherings serve to raise awareness and provide support to families who have lost loved ones.

Valleyview and our neighbouring community of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has a local connection to this movement, as there are a number of victims who are from Sturgeon Lake and also off-reserve Indigenous communities. It is hoped that the Sisters In Spirit Walk will benefit our community by giving the public the opportunity to acknowledge the loss of those whose lives ended violently, or who have gone missing, and to show support for those left behind. Our society must ensure that the rights and safety of our Indigenous sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers are respected and protected.
